Caring for your Old Barn Leather Product

Being a natural material, each piece of leather has a character all of its own

  • Leather is a natural product and its surface is seldom uniform, which is part of its charm

  • Stretch marks, gentle surface and colour variations are characteristic

  • Small blemishes and scars may also be present. These may also be due to tanning and curing processes

  • Leather contains natural oils and therefore its colour can vary slightly and dyes may not ‘take’ uniformly across its surface

  • Leather is not waterproof!

  • If the leather should get wet, dab it with a soft, absorbent cotton cloth and leave it to dry naturally

  • Never use a hairdryer or radiator to dry leather as this will cause the leather to become brittle and it may even crack eventually

  • To keep its lustre, polish your leather item from time to time with a good quality leather balm or natural wax

  • You can also use a little beeswax but be sure to buff it thoroughly and remove all traces from the stitching

  • Try not to leave leather in direct sunlight for prolonged periods as it will dry out and the colour is likely to fade or become patchy
