Celtic Stallion
Celtic Stallion
‘A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!’ said Richard III according to William Shakespeare.
As with many ancient peoples, the Celts also had very close bonds with their horses. This is not surprising considering their importance in the lives of the Celts -horses were essential to their survival, from cultivation and transport to victory in battle. It’s also no great surprise that they took on a religiosity of their own and it was considered in some cultures that the treatment of horses would be reciprocated. If you looked after your horse in life, it would look after you in the afterlife. This may be the reason they appear so often carved into ancient stones, in burial sites and ‘tattooed’ onto rural landscapes.
