Rock Paintings
Rock Paintings
Inspiration for this carving came from rock paintings seen in South Africa, in the Cederberg Mountains of the Southern Cape, and in the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg National Park and World Heritage Site in KwaZulu Natal. Thought to be the work of the San People (sometimes referred to as the Bushmen), there are thousands of examples of these beautiful and ancient paintings and engravings all over South Africa.
The oldest known rock paintings in the world were discovered in South Africa, in the Blombos Caves on the coast of the Southern Cape. They have been dated to over 73,000 years old!
As I first began carving this cover, I had a sense of what it might have felt like to etch or paint images onto virgin sandstone. I made a mental note to have a go on a stone in the sometime.
